About the Artist
Jon grew up in Wyoming, and made friends with the wind and open spaces. He attended college at the University of Wyoming BFA/MFA 1973 majoring in Art. He then had a 25-year job in computers to support a family and his “painting habit.” During that time, he changed. He taught beginning Drawing and Watercolor classes for the University of Wyoming Art Department, from 1998 – 2007, and has since retired.
Jon was sitting in his backyard thinking of making an honest artist statement. He has always been moved by the sensations of being in a place… What it looks like from here, what it feels like to be here, what is essential in the appearance, what is clear in the mind and his emotional response to all this. He hopes to build these things into his work. There are failures, that when acknowledged may seed a success. He may not always “know what he is doing” but later will “understand what he has done”. He generally works with the large building blocks of shape, light, color, calligraphy, and composition, using details as a cook would use seasonings in finishing a dish. If the resulting image moves him (tastes good) he believes it is successful.
