Barbara Bogart

About the Artist

Born and raised in California, Barbara lived in the South and the Midwest before discovering that Wyoming was her true home.  She has lived in the state since 1991 (aside from a 4-year period of exile in Florida). In 2013, she moved to Laramie. She joined the Laramie Artist Project in 2020.

Although she had made photographs with her Brownie camera as a teenager, experimented in college with an Olympus half-frame camera, and used a Pentax to document her folklore fieldwork, her first serious foray into photography as art came in 2010, when she took a class from a gifted photographer and inspirational teacher. 

In her practice, Barbara is drawn to color and texture, pattern and form. She finds beauty and interest in the overlooked and the underfoot elements of the everyday world. Her images are often simple compositions that evoke a mood of quiet reflection, explore an unexpected scene, or capture a surprising moment. Recently she has been experimenting with a range of creative techniques to broaden the power of her images.

Her intention as a photographer is to show viewers how to look more closely at the world around them. This is in line with her mantra, adopted from poet Mary Oliver: "Pay attention.  Be amazed.  Tell about it."
